Is there a workaround to place tick labels inside a chart to gain space?
Setting layout.yaxis.ticks: 'inside' should do the trick:

Oops, I didn’t read your question properly.
Unfortunately, we don’t expose a way to place the tick labels inside the plot area at the moment.
As a workaround, I am doing it with text annotations. Works fine.
